Helen EsueneAisha HassanTwo female Senators -Messrs Helen Esuene (PDP Akwa Ibom South) and Aisha Al-Hassan (PDP Taraba North)- on Wednesday declared their ambition to contest the 2015 governorship election in their respective states.

They declared their intention at a joint news conference held at the National Assembly.

The Senators said they had decided to throw their hats into the race in their different states to complement the efforts men had been making over the years in the same capacity.

They also pledged to  ”bring about more impactful governance on citizens of the states as far as genuine development was concerned.”

Esuene said, “We are not saying we are better than men that have been occupying these positions over the years in the two states and infact across the 36 states of the federation.

“We are only saying as responsible women, we shall be less distracted in office like any of the men that had served in that capacity with attendant highly focused and development-driven governance.

“Our efforts would no doubt take our states to greater heights in all ramifications.

Al-Hassan, who attributed their successes in the Senate as female lawmakers to the Almighty God and the press,  solicited for more support from the press on their ambitions.

New York: The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio’s decision to zone the governorship position of Akwa Ibom State to the Eket Senatorial District (ESD) come 2015 has received an accolade from an Eket born activist, Mr. Sam Itauma.

The New York based Akwa Ibomite took to tweeting, commending the governor as the news of his decision to handover power to a candidate from Eket Senatorial District spilled the airwaves.

” Once in awhile, leaders make not just remarkable but a very laudable policy statement. The governor’s decision to hand power to the ESD deserves no mean accolade…the governor has now cleared the coast for justice to prevail in the tripod state. This is significantly a welcome development”
He called on the people of Eket Senatorial District to prove to the entire state that the area has more than enough credibly potential candidates for the Hilltop Mansion by parading men and women of sterling qualities to vie for the state top job of the state.

” ESD is now obligated to fly out its credible and visionary leaders for the #tripod state top job. Proud and
trusting that you’ve more than enough to sell…” Itauma assured.

He wondered why the biggest senatorial district in state could just be flaunted as an area with dearth of credible and popular candidates. He maintained that spanning from Ikot Abasi via the main Eket local government area to the Oron axis, he could see that the ESD is endowed with not just powerful, political players but terrific ones. He further argued that if the area prided itself with chains of good and qualitative leaders in the past, he sees no reason why such leaders would not multiply by now; alluding to Brig/Gen Udokaha Jacob Esuene former governor of the old Eastern State, Justice Eghert Udo Udoma, former Chief Judge of Uganda, Dr Clement Isong, governor of former Cross River State and Senator Victor Akan, a senator during Shehu Shagari’s era, all of blessed memory who played pivotal role in country in different capacity during their days.
“Down the streamy isle of Ikot Abasi via the greasy path of Eket to the salty clime of Oron you can’t beat the weighty substance of power players; they’re just too terrific…If yesterday we’d the Agbert Udoma, the Isong, the Esuene, the and Victor Akan in ESD; today such heroic #dramatis personae must have tripled.” The New York based campaigner of Eket descent cried out.

Meanwhile, Mr Itauma has called on the Akwa Ibom people to respect the privacy of the former SSG, Mr Umana Okon Umana since he’s no longer public servant. He made the called while congratulating him on his 54th birthday. Using his twitter account, Itauma described Umana as an illustrious son of Akwa Ibom state and an astute leader.
“I wish this illustration son of Akwa Ibom state, #UOU, a unique and Happy Birth Day, albeit, belated. An astute leader with a tall passion to serve his people diligently…” He tweeted last week
