Senator Godswill Akpabio’s Local Government under siege as ‘Akwa Marine cult group’ attacks many

I really sympathized with pensioners - Akwa Ibom Former Governor, Senator Akpabio - thekillerpunch news

Dozens of residents have fled a community in Akwa Ibom after repeated attacks by a suspected cult group, locals and security officials say.

Residents of Midim Atan village in Essien Udim local government area of the state said at least two people have so far been killed and many more injured in attacks by a group known as Akwa Marine.

“Akwa Marine led by Emmanuel Ben has been disturbing our community for many years. The problem is not just the cultists but the people sponsoring them and that is why it has been difficult to clamp them down,” said a local chief, Efene Jeremiah.

The unrest has lasted years, and police have made limited success against the group despite an investigation by a team set up by the former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to probe its activities.

The divisional police officer for Essien Udim, Alhassan Guda, said he was new at the post and could not comment on the activities of the gang.

But the spokesperson for the police’s Criminal Investigation Department, Chike Nwabuwa, told this newspaper that an investigation team had long been set up by Mr. Arase, to monitor and investigate the activities of the gang following several complaints. He declined to disclose the findings of the panel.

The Investigating Police Officer in charge of the case, Abdul Mohammed, did not also disclose the findings when contacted by PREMIUM TIMES.

Many residents say the group has been emboldened by police inaction.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which also received multiple petitions on the matter, also said police had not responded to its request for details of the attacks.

The civil rights department of the ministry told PREMIUM TIMES that the ministry had written to the Police IG’s office regarding the case, but had received no response for months.

Security officials and locals, many of whom had fled the community, blame the lack of aggressive police response on links between the group and powerful politicians from the area.

They say the group was set up ahead of the 2011 elections to go after perceived opponents of top politicians from the area, including former Governor Godswill Akpabio, whom they accuse of providing support for the group.

Mr. Akpabio denies the allegation. His spokesperson, Anietie Ekong, told PREMIUM TIMES the former governor, who is now the Senate minority leader, would not sponsor a criminal gang.

“It is pure political mischief to link the distinguished Senator to a criminal gang,” Mr. Ekong said.

He said several petitions sent by community members to different law enforcement agencies, linking Mr. Akpabio to the group, were “politically motivated”.

“Any criminal who has been apprehended by the security agencies should be made to face the consequences of his action,” Mr. Ekong said, referring to the recent arrest of Mr. Ben.

Attacks and killings

Ahead of the elections in 2011 and 2015, attacks by the group largely targeted those perceived to support political parties other than the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the state’s governing party, several security officials and witnesses told PREMIUM TIMES.

Victor Udom, a community member, told this newspaper how he and another resident of the community, Samuel Ikpa, fled the community after being attacked in 2015 on suspicion they supported the main opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC.

“On that fateful morning, we were suddenly surrounded by members of the gang led by Emmanuel Ben. Before we could say jack, kicks, hits and blows rained on us,” Mr. Udom, a former ExxonMobil staff said. “If not for some community members who saw what was happening and alerted the police on surveillance team on ground for the election, we would have been dead.”

In recent months, the attacks have been more random, with gang members going after non-members suspected of supporting efforts to clamp down on the group.

Mr. Udom’s cousin, Udo Udom, was killed and set alight alongside another community member, Ekpenyong Uwa, in September 2016, by the group, this paper confirmed. The group accused them of theft, an allegation their families strongly denies.

After evading capture for years, Mr. Ben was finally arrested in February by the police, with the support of the State Security Service, SSS, and locals.

Mr. Ben was transferred to Abuja where he is currently being held at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, office on allegations of terrorism and murder.

But some community members say the police, under pressure from politicians, are making efforts to send him back to Akwa Ibom on claims his offences are not federal crimes. Police did not respond to that claim.

Seeking justice

In recent weeks, attacks have escalated in the small community largely in response to Mr. Ben’s arrest.

A fortnight ago, members of the gang attacked the local market, called Urua Nsong Eto, and vandalised shops, sending traders scampering for safety. They also torched homes of those suspected to be in support of Mr. Ben’s arrest.

In a bid to get government’s attention on the activities of the gang, fleeing community members mobilised and travelled to Abuja for a protest march on April 27, but were denied permission by the commissioner of police, FCT command, Musa Kimo.Mr. Udom said police advised them to take the protest to Akwa Ibom. The community leaders later marched to Louis Edet House, the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they narrated their personal experiences at the hands of the group’s leader, Mr. Ben.

Amongst several crimes, Mr. Ben is accused of ordering the killing of the two men murdered in Midim Atan: Udo Udom and Ekpenyong Uwa.

Mr. Udom’s mother, Nse John, was one of the over a dozen community members who managed to travel to Abuja in April to seek justice.

She told PREMIUM TIMES her son was killed by the gang led by Mr. Ben on September 28, 2016.

“They came and took my child from the house at 7 pm. When they left with my child, I was not feeling well, I put on my clothes and walked gently. Before I could get there, they had killed him and cut him into pieces,” Mrs. John narrated amidst tears.

The community chief, Mr. Jeremiah, who corroborated the story, told PREMIUM TIMES the attacks have continued because of the support the group receives from powerful individuals.

“We have gone to many security agencies, when we call them, they will say the situation is a very bad one but nothing will be done,” he said.

Akpabio Needs To Make Peace With His Enemies.

7 Jul

By Asuquo Nyong Ette

“He should try to reach out personally to those whom he has hurt ( or even hurt him), make a time to wine and dine with them”

Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom State Governor.

Gov Akpabio has barely nine months to vacate the Hilltop Mansion. He might be painting a very horrendous picture of himself in his last lap of his administration. This should be a period of recompense, reparation and restitution; not vendetta!Akpabio‘s advisers are not doing him any justice by trying to make him look very bad at this time of his “good bye to all that”. If after seven years of Thomas purported vituperation and ‘mutiny’ , nothing happened to him, is this the time for payback?

He should try to reach out personally to those whom he has hurt ( or even hurt him), make a time to wine and dine with them. It is no longer time for his man’s Friday to take the front burner. Sycophancy should be trashed by now. Soon he will be an ordinary person, apart from his bullet proof cars, his security will be trimmed, SSS and the dark glasses boys will no longer walk beside his car. It is time for his critics too to shield swords!

But one problem is, his imposition agenda would not let this happen! Even if it is Akpbio’s mother that will take over from him, she will not take instruction from Akpabio after six months! During the first three years of his emergence, I was his big fan! I lauded his generosity and pragmatism. I turned one of his critics when paranoid sycophants turned his administration into money making venture, snitching, blackmailing, spying and even killing sometimes, oblivious of his thoughts. Today what I’m I doing? Watching with my Ishiewu! Of course, there is God oohhhh!! #FreeThomasThomasNow!

Threat to Akpabio’s Life: Dr. Ime Umanah Wins Again.

6 Jul

BY NDON ASIAN

The Akwa Ibom State Government found itself at a cross road in the ongoing trial of Dr. Ime Sampson Umanah as Hon. Justice Ifiok Ukana ruled to reject the statement of the first accused person in the trial within trial. This is the second time that the same statement has been ruled upon and marked “rejected” in a second trial within trial.

Akpabio and Ime Umanah.

The first was by the Honourable State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Idongesit Ntem Isua, whose earlier ruling has now been vindicated. Hon. Justice Ukana in a detailed and very well considered ruling captured every argument, evidence led, cross examination and important issues relevant to arriving at the conclusion in the mini-trial. Much of what rendered the case of the state against Ime Umanah and Ikemesit Iyire in the trial within trial hopelessly doomed included evidence of what transpired at the place of arrest of DW 1 (Mr. Ikemesit Iyire) before the departure from Ikot Ekpene to Uyo and inside the bus, which were not challenged nor contradicted.

It is instructive to observe that throughout the trial within trial the state either failed or neglected to have any of the operatives who effected the arrest of the first accused testify as one of its witnesses.

Again, the Court noted that the only version of event which transpired before and after DW1 was taken before the state Director of SSS is that of DW1, concluding that the state failed to cross-examine DW1 in respect of his narration of the event, that is the meeting with the Director. “The prosecution is divided as to whether the two pages of the statement are in the same ink. There is no evidence from the prosecution particularly PW1 (Uche Nwokolo) who said he supervised the taking of the statement that as the statement was being written by DW1 he encountered problem with the writing material he was using.

That evidence should have come from him but he did not offer any such explanation”, the Court pointed out on the issue of different shades of ink on the two pages of the alleged confessional. On the mutilated date on the confessional statement form signed by PW 3 (DSP Moses Eno), the Court had the following to say, “I have looked at the said confessional statement form. Directly after PW3 signature is his rank DSP next to it is the mutilated date. It shows a superimposition of 5 on 3 with 2 in front of 5 to achieve 25.

Thereafter you find a doctoring of 0 to 1 with another 1 in front obviously to change 11 to 10, all to present to this Court 25/10/2010 as against 3/11/2010. I have said that every document speaks for itself. What the confessional statement form has spoken with respect to the date written by PW3 is that it is mutilated, changed from 3/11/2010 to 25/10/2010”. And for the second time PW3 was said not to be a truthful witness. “Using this to assess the evidence of PW3 is without wasting words, is to say that PW3 is not a witness of truth. I cannot believe him”, the Court noted.

On the urge by lead defense counsel, Samuel Ikpo Esq. that the Court should expunge the evidence of Uche Nwokolo from the record of proceedings in the trial within trial, Justice Ukana ruled that “PW1 was listed as a witness in the main trial to that extent he could be accommodated in the trial within a trial. However given his reaction to the statement filed along with the notice of additional evidence on 12/7/2013 where PW1 distanced himself from the statement credited to him PW1 cannot be the person through whom any document considered fit can be admitted as exhibit in the main trial”. In the end the Court held that, “Arising from the totality of the foregoing I hold that the statement of the 1st accused person who is DW1 in this trial which statement is dated 25/10/2010 was not voluntary. It was a product of inducement. If the statement of 25/10/2010 is not voluntary, the confessional statement form cannot validate it and cloth it with a toga of voluntariness given its own problem.

Consequently the statement credited to the 1st accused and dated 25/10/2010 and the confessional statement form shall both be marked rejected”. The ruling has not only laid to rest the controversy which surrounded the statement but has additionally limited the options of the state to four. The state may proceed to appeal in what may certainly amount to an exercise in delay and waste of time or it may continue into the main trial without any exhibit to found a conviction.

The state may also wish, as a face saving measure, to enter a nully prosecui through the Attorney General, to discontinue the case or commence the trial afresh in another Court, but this option may be impossible to explain to Court why there should be no end to litigation. Speaking shortly after the ruling one Daniel Uko from Abak among the many consistent faces that had followed this trial who spoke with Weekly Insight praised the boldness and forthrightness of the Judge whom he described as “very intelligent and acting without fear or favour”. Uko also praised the defense team particularly Samuel Ikpo Esq. and wondered why the government should not read “the handwriting on the wall and save itself from the embarrassment of losing after this many years in court”, to withdraw. The state was represented by Mary Okobo (Mrs) while Samuel Ikpo Esq led a team of seven layers for the defense.

AKPABIO & THE HUNGRY ABAK BOYS.

By Clayton Udoh.

Godswill Obot Akpabio

Nobody had the guts to oppose Akpabio, everything he said or did was law , so what is his reason for not building one single viable project in Abak?  The people of Abak are so scared that they will thank those that killed their loved ones , so let people like me ask,” WHAT DID AKPABIO BUILD IN ABAK?”Airport ? Seaport? Stadium ? University ? Federal Polytechnic ? Industry?
Now that 2014  has reached the half year mark and we are going to 2015 . Let Godswill Akpabio show me one solid project he did for Abak.
I am fucking pissed off and really really angry. Enugu boys here in Phoenix, Arizona are spending money like water and enjoying their life courtesy of Unoma Akpabio and my question is simple: minus Aniekan Umanah and Enoidem and a few crumb eaters who has Akpabio really empowered in the Abak axis ? By the way Enoidem is not from Abak!
We hear about Onofiok Luke and others he has empowered and lifted up and other numerous Ibibio boys ( interesting that Ibibio has nothing good to say about Akpabio after the fact).
Where are all the Abak boys who use to fight me over rice and crumbs they were given ? They formed fictitious stories about me , photoshopped my pictures and hacked into my email accounts and other private property .  Have they seen now that all I said was correct and Akpabio did nothing for Abak and rather came and took the Senate seat from slugs like you?
All that a tout from Abak understands is money that is given to them to put in their pockets while the rest of the state is being developed .
Some of you God forsaken Abak people even combined with Essien Ndueso and Anieite Ekong and others to try and destroy me . All I am asking  today is a simple question, what was created for Abak? Millennium Hospital?  The new Hilton which is to be built ? E-Library ? Ibom Power Plant?  Le Meridien ?
You thought that it was OK? to run Dr Ime Umanah into exile so show me what was built in Abak!!!!!!!!!!!.
At this point Abak is the laughing stock of Annang.
In a million years ABAK can never dream of taking a Senate seat from Ikot Ekpene-Obot Akara-Essien Udim axis .
When touts represent a place what do we think will happen ? You guys want money right?
Money finishes , project lasts for ages ,so what project did he do in Abak that can employ people like at least the Airport ?
Look my life is good enough , no matter what sycophants like most of you did to destroy me . In the end , I could have said , to hell with Abak” and enjoy my life in the USA. I cannot do that because Abak is my ancestral land and the roots of my origin . However when I think of Abak , it makes me real sad because no Governor has ever executed a Major project in Abak since the inception of Akwa Ibom State.
Nonetheless, how can any person take Abak serious when they will take lunch with the killer of their sons and daughters just for crumb money?
If there is a way , they should kill Idiongo Clayton Udoh for talking nonsense against Governor or kill Dr Ime Umanah and destroy all resistance against Governor, kill them all and then my reply would be,” After you sang and danced for him what major projects did he establish in Abak?”
You guys are ready to die for Akpabio and kill everybody on his behalf and I ask when you kill take that blood and sprinkle it on the major project Akpabio built for Abak.
Tell me it will be an Ibibio governor that will endorse a major project for Abak like the ones in the past have done ? Right?
The wisdom of collecting money to put in your pocket because of hunger is one thing , the wisdom of holding your dignity so that someone does not take you for granted is another!
The next governor who  will be Ibibio will be very busy but nobody will take Abak that is full of sycophancy with political praise and worship seriously.
Abak is yet to have a governor who brought something as close as Alscon that was built in Ikot Abasi to Abak.
In fact thank your God, I am not Akpabio because I would have taken the turn for House of Representative and given it to my Nephew since you guys are such cowards and full to the brim with stupidity.
I am speaking loudly to both the Witches  and wizards in Diaspora and the homefront . The uneducated baboons that have never taken time to study how governments work and therefore want a King or a one party system . After you destroyed all resistance to the present administration like in the proverb called Abak what were you left with?
A government that ignored you because it knew it could get support from you even if they killed all of your most valuable citizens ! They do not even need to lift a finger because you would kill them yourselves !

Enough is Enough; we need a real Governor!

Akpabio

The son of the Late Assassinated Albert Ukpanah has been picked up by the police. The insinuation made on the young man is that he killed his own father. This is buttressed by the police accusation that he tampered with the scene of the crime .
Here in the USA ,how long would it take for the police to arrive at the scene of the crime ? How long should the young man have left his father lying in his blood in the sand to wait for the arrival of the “Nigerian” police to a crime scene?
In other words this is all nonsense and an attack against that family from the pit of hell.
For crying out loud, this family has gone through enough. I do not have word strong enough  to describe what this looks like and what is happening to the state of morality in this region of Nigeria.
The synopsis is simple; Akwa Ibom State is totally cult infested and the son of Albert Ukpanah is being “squeezed to drop all evidence and information” that may lead to the Father’s killers. You would think that the killing of the Father is enough and that the police should not be used as a vehicle to destroy this family. I fear for the life of the young man in detention and I abhor the present turn of events in Annangland, Akwa Ibom State.

We need a real Governor who has the power to call his subordinates to order when they are bringing cult tactics against a family. We also need the next Governor to be someone who can deal with the level of infestation of cult dogma and activities in the state.
The “strong” man involved in this case should understand that in killing Albert Ukpanah he has won based on his own standards. Albert Ukpanah uttered some things he did not like about his political aspirations and he killed him. He should not go after the son, he should move on.
People are so sick that they are blaming Albert Ukpanah for running his mouth and bringing this upon himself. Really ? Instead of the animals realizing that there is a curse on the land when elders are getting killed for money or second terms!!!!

On this very note, I doubt if Udom Emmanuel can operate as the Governor of Akwa Abasi Ibom State! He is not a cult guy and I do not believe he has the spine to deal with these guys that control every level of politics in Akwa Abasi Ibom State. We need someone that can stop this tide of Satanism infesting the state.
Akwa Abasi Ibom State has been sold to Satan and needs to be redeemed. The Killers and Murderers and Kidnappers are the Honorable Alpha and Omega while honest people are the ones hated for their honesty.

The moral compass of the youth has been destroyed and they go after people using character assassination, insults and every tool in the book against those who are telling the truth and asking for change in the system. Their heroes are the new breed of Cult-politicians that give them peanuts out of what they have looted.

That is why I have no pity for the youth in Akwa Abasi Ibom State, for they have chosen what they want the state to be like. A state with No jobs, No opportunity, No Industry, lots of fake motivational Speakers using them as pawns, lots of roads and hotels and stuff they will discover has nothing to do with their own progress as individuals(lots of them will never have cars to drive on those roads or money to sleep in the hotels), Cult-politicians dashing them money and every single person aspiring to become a politician, spending their lives praising and kneeling in front of others for their own livelihood, a land in which you could be killed at the blink of an eye for the sake of a sick person’s ego !
Inside this story the Governor’s Super Pension Bill is passed for the joy and praise of the lost youth and lost generation of people who think it is normal to stay at home without a job at the age of thirty; just hustling daily !!!

They insult, blackmail, spite and hold in contempt diaspora because of the manifestation of the greedy ones in our midst. They wish they could harm those  who are outspoken and fighting to stop the corruption that has rendered Akwa Abasi Ibom State an African version of China(Nice Infrastructure full of poor people).

No you tell me, you guys have evolved to the point in which you are killing old men and going after their children and what’s left ?? You guys have evolved into people that laugh at other people’s misfortune based on a total breakdown of law and order and you think, you can escape from such widespread chaos for too long ?

Mark my words, as the blood spills for whatever excuse(elections, ego, ignorance), so will most of you walk on those hot dry roads of Uncommon Transformation wondering why there are no jobs or opportunities and that’s when God will remind you that you should forget about breakthrough because the land is steeped in people’s blood. Rather go and dance for your friend, the Cult-politician and see if he will give you something for breakfast !

Open Letter To Akwa Ibom Tribalists.

10 May

By Clayton “Bane” Udoh

Clayton Udoh

I am speaking to a large swath of people both in Akwa Abasi Ibom State and in Diaspora. A group of people, whose self-worth comes from discrimination of others based on tribe.

Their utterances distinguish them from the true thinkers and movers of the society. In my eyes they stand out like man-eating crocodiles. The stink more than elephants, that have not jumped into the river in a month. They are the ultimate “time criminals” because they prevent us from moving successfully into the future. They are everything but progressive or enterprising or dynamic.

These people have God’s mercy in that the bile in them is contained by a society weighed down by the worst level of economic inequality. A society that needs financial stimuli badly, for the common man.

The beauty of tribe is for the purpose of identity that really comprises who we are as a people. However when it is used for discrimination, it becomes odious and totally useless to mankind.

So I cannot live my life with the knowledge that I may not comprise of the major tribes in Nigeria or that Annang in the minds of the imbeciles is inferior to Ibibio or that I am the last in a Hierarchy in the USA (White man then White woman then Black women then the Hispanic question and last is the Black man). Does no good, to my welfare, or that of the people of Akwa Abasi Ibom State at large.

One thing that is interesting is the evolution we are seeing in the political theater of AKS. An Ibibio man/woman has no problem sending assassins to another Ibibio man he thinks has politically gotten in his way. Same goes for Annang. Same goes for interaction of Ibibio with Annang and vice versa. So where is the stability in your stupid tribal platform? The tribal rants you blow from your mouth, in which you have not brushed your teeth for three days, may not even save your life in certain scenarios among your own so why are you heaving bile in the name of reasoning?

Let’s get one thing right ,for all the tribalist, out there, Godswill Akpabio is the worst thing that could have happened to most of you .An Annang man attempting to bring in development ? An Annang governor who made some of you realize that there is something greater than your selfish desires to always use government money to buy undies for your wives? Even though I am not a great fan of the Governor myself ,I can see why some of youdegenerates andperverts with Doctorate degrees and Professorships would say things that make kids look brilliant just to bring down someone based on tribe.

With all your education for how long can Akwa Abasi Ibom State exist on the count of tribe? Hasn’t it finally been proven to you class of degenerates that what matters is the content of a man’s character and not his tribe which nowadays is just a name? Tribe does not assure one of financial success, educational acumen or spiritual morality or ability to administer to a people.

So now that we are going into the twilight of this present administration and the evident installation of a new one, let the schizophrenic tribalists both home and abroad understand that the next administration cannot waste its time with the stupid “revenge of Ibibio agenda”! Too many of our people, are suffering and wasting a lifetime trying to figure out their survival while the morons are blowing the tribe trumpet.

The present system is unsustainable because we cannot have a governor who tries to pay out all of the state and has an army of praise singers behind him for the sake of his survival. So we need the structures in place that will bring prosperity to our people. For the amenities are useless if the people do not possess the spending power to use them. I do not care how grand the idea is; the people must patronize the industries and all forms of infrastructure and pay for the supplies of goods and services. How on earth does tribalism contribute to this?

For example, at this very period, any candidate who wants to ride into the hilltop mansion on a wave of Tribalism is a Hedgehog to me. Do not give a damn about his/her tribal affiliations.

However I am betting on the bush men to create Ubom Enyong Ibibio Association or Ikwa Annang Organisation for a political candidate. Meanwhile we will never see a Facebook or YouTube video file of this person introducing their manifesto to the Akwa Abasi Ibom people. Minus their money can they even speak English? How do we expect a candidate not to act like Caesar when they were never required to address the people whom they are trying to become lords over?

The greatest resistance of change nowadays comes from bush men in Diaspora. They will never insist in the candidates releasing manifestos or video files or persuasive speeches on why they are the right candidate.

People will come over to me and say vote Assam Assam and I ask why? Well he is Ibibio and he is dynamic. How? (Silence).

Vote for Albert Bassey or whatever his name is! Why? Well he served in the last government and is Ibibio. And?
(Silence).

People will write ,vote for Udom Emmanuel ! Why? He is the SSG and from Eket! And ? (Silence). Meanwhile the last thing I saw this individual do is go after the press!

I repeat that it does not matter where tribalist reside. tribalist slime stands out in Diaspora or the Home front like a sore thumb. For those of us who really care about Akwa Abasi Ibom State we are sending out a clear message that even if others approve of such down low thinking. We who are enlightened truly believe that you are scum !!

Note:    Akwa Ibom State is for every one and no particular tribe !!!!!

Blame Akpabio for Assassination of Ukpanah.

19 Mar
By Thompson Essien.

Gov Akpabio shifts governorship to ESDAkwa Ibom State Politics: The Assassination of Albert Ukpanah—Blame Godswill Akpabio!
As it happened to Chief Paul Inyang, Edidem James Obot, Barrister Udonwa, and many others, on Wednesday, March 13, 2014, Chief Albert Ukpanah was assassinated in his home. His assailant, or assailants, fled the scene, leaving more tears in the eyes and anguish on the faces of his loved ones.
Until his assassination, Chief Albert Ukpanah was one of the strongest voices against the unjust, corrupt, murderous, and evil administration of Godswill Obot Akpabio. Late in the evening of Wednesday the 13th of March 2014, he was watching a football (soccer) match with his son when he received a telephone call from a person who was very likely to be someone whom Chief Ukpanah knew very well.
The caller told Chief Ukpanah that he and his colleagues were on their way to his house because an important visitor wanted to have a meeting with him. Ukpanah instructed his son to open the gate to his house for the visitors. After the son had served them with refreshments, he retired to another section of the house to continue watching the English League Football game. During the half-time intermission, the son returned to check on the father and his visitors, only to find his father in a pool of blood; he had been shot and his visitors had fled.
Those who knew him very well have confirmed that Chief Albert Ukpanah was a simple man, an Engineer by profession, who was not interested in accumulating material wealth. His number one expectation was to see the leaders of his community build a better society where future generations, such as his only son, could grow to live a meaningful life. For demanding accountability from leaders of his community, Chief Ukpanah is no longer alive; cut down from the assassin’s bullets. He had only one child. According to the Holy Bible; “Bloodthirsty men hate a man of integrity and seek to kill the upright” (Proverbs 29:10—NIV).
No matter the speculations and self-denial, it is obvious that the assassination of Chief Albert Ukpanah may not be unconnected with the political ambition of Godswill Akpabio to become the next Senator representing Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State.
Reports have surfaced that the late Chief Ukpanah was a leading voice among those who are against Akpabio’s ambition for the senate seat. Ukpanah had agitated and had been advising his people not to support Akpabio because he thought the next person to occupy the Senate seat should be an indigene of Abak Federal Constituency (where he comes from). Some supporters of Akpabio, such as Emmanuel Enoidem and Nse Ntuen, have been known to resent Chief Ukpanah for his opposition against Akpabio’s ambition.
The assassination of Chief Ukpanah is not the first time anyone opposed to Akpabio had been so dealt with. Listen to the immediate past member representing Abak State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Uwem Udoma: “Recall that before the 2011 governorship election in this state,
there were lots of kidnappings and bloodshed but as soon as the election
was over, the whole tension died down. That era of terror has resurfaced again. I want to inform you that a chieftain of the PDP and a strong advocate and fighter for the actualization of the Abak Federal Constituency senatorial project, Chief Albert Ukpanah was last Wednesday killed by unknown persons
” (http://blog4all-com.blogspot.com/2014/03/akpabios-2015-senatorial-aspiration.html).
The killers of Chief Albert Ukpanah may never be known, but the motive is very well known. The assassins are deceiving themselves into believing that by eliminating him, Godswill Akpabio will sail through the process to the Senate floor of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, unchallenged. Again, listen to Uwem Udoma: “The ex-lawmaker, who is aspiring to represent the Abak Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, maintained that he would not be intimidated by the assassination of Chief Ukpanah as he would continue to fight for the enthronement of a person from his area in the Senate in 2015” (http://blog4all-com.blogspot.com/2014/03/akpabios-2015-senatorial-aspiration.html).
While many people may clap for the likes of Uwem Udoma, who has vowed to continue the fight against self-imposition on the people by Godswill Akpabio, it is safe to say that this fight may be too late in coming because the Annang people in particular had been selfish in their attitudes and behaviors—as a group—by remaining quiet, without any voice of condemnation against the political terror which Godswill Akpabio reigned on their Ibibio brethren during the 2010-2011 governorship campaign.
When Chief Paul Inyang was assassinated, the Annang did not give a damn—they looked the other away and pretended as if our State was normal.
When Barrister Udonwa was assassinated, the Annang looked the other away, instead of condemning the evils that were about to consume our once peaceful state at the time.
When Edidem James Robert Obot was assassinated, the Annang said nothing and according to them, it was Ibibio that were killing their fellow Ibibio men and women. The Annang never asked why no such assassinations occurred during the administrations of past governors.
When Senator Akpan Udoedehe was arrested and charged to court under trumped up charges, the Annang praised their son—the governor—for dealing “very well” with opposition.
Even when their fellow Annang son, Dr. Ime Umana, was arrested and charged to court by Akpabio under false allegations of planning to kill Akpabio, the Annang, especially those of Ikot Ekpene extraction, remained quiet, after all their son—the governor—was dealing in a “justifiable” manner with an ungrateful man—they believed the lies of Godswill Akpabio.
Before her death, the mother of King Lemuel taught his son the following; “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:8-9—NIV).
Because the Annang did not condemn and did not speak up against the evils of political assassinations and kidnappings for ransom when Akpabio exacted his terror on Ibibio people, now they are beginning to face what their brethren of Ibibio extraction had endured during the 2010-2011 campaign. The killing will continue because it is one of the tools of intimidation which Godswill Akpabio is prepared and willing to exact on all those that his warp mind will tell him are the stumbling blocks to his mad ambition to become the next Senator from Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.
