*PDP Chapter Chairmen Get Cars, Cash, Contract
ImageThe Akwa Ibom state governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has commenced his race to enthrone a successor in a swingy free spending. The first beneficiaries of the monetary inducement are the 31 chapter chairmen of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the 31 local government areas of the state.
In a meeting on September 26, 2013, attended by the 31 LGA chapter chairmen, the PDP state chairman, Mr. Paul Ekpo, the state secretary, Barr Ibanga Akpabio and the governor, the governor formally presented the current SSG, Mr. Emmanuel Udom as the person the party should support in for the race to the Hiltop Mansion. He said that after taking cognizance of the developmental needs of the state as well as the need for equity and justice in the distribution of the governorship among the three senatorial districts of the state.
The governor further stated that he tried to give his ex-SSG some sort of soft landing by nominating him for the position of the NDDC Managing Director job. He stated that he was surprised that the ex-SSG turned down the offer, preferring instead to contest the governorship position.
He urged the chapter chairmen not to have anything to do with Obong Umana Okon Umana, the former SSG, put concentrate their support for Emmanuel Udom, whom he said was a choice that meets competence and zoning.
A chapter chairman who was at the meeting, but pleaded not to be mentioned, said the governor thanked them for their support and expressed regrets that he has not taken adequate note of their welfare, but promised to henceforth ensure that they were well cared for. For the beginning, our source said that the governor asked them to go home and register companies, for those who have not done so already and present their company registration for immediate release of jobs to them. They were also promised brand new cars that they would take delivery within the next two weeks
“We were elated and pleased, but the icing was the N500, 000, he gave to each of us as transport. Thank God, even if it is only the car I get, they can do whatever they like with the governorship”, our source told our reporter.
Asked if he was comfortable with the choice of the current SSG, the chapter chairman said, “what is my own? As a politician, I watch out for who best would take care of my interest. With the car and the contract, I know Akpabio has tried. So whoever comes must take care of my personal needs. Wetin be my own? If they steal and give me small, man pikin go take. I no sabi the new man. He never talk to us. Na from him mouth we go know whether he go play well”.
Another chapter chairman Weekly Insight called on the phone merely laughed and warned the paper not to write any nonsense until he receives his car. He said that even if he was given anything, it was the state’s money and not the personal money of anyone. He said he still reserved the right to support whoever he likes, because, “I am not a kid in politics”.
Some observers are worried on where the money was going to come from. They say the governor has no right to use state funds to feather the political nest of any individual politician. “What happens to the chapter chairman of other political parties in the state, or is PDP the only political party in Akwa Ibom state?” he queried.
Another observer, a ward chairman of PDP, prayed that the largess extended to the chapter chairmen be extended to them at the ward level.
A top politician in the state, who also craved anonymity said that the governor would be “reaching” out to all levels of support in the state, adding that the man he is pushing his aspiration has no roots and therefore must be carried on the governor’s shoulders for him to make any headway. He added that the Akpabio administration has monetized politics so much that if you are not “loaded” you can hardly achieve anything politically.
